Robert "Rube" Ruby

Robert “Rube” Ruby, 83, of Kearney passed away Thursday, July 23, 2026 at the Central Nebraska Veterans Home in Kearney. A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 4, 2026 at the Central Nebraska Veterans Home. Burial will follow at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery in Grand Island.

Rube was born May 29, 1943 in McCook, NE to William and Eunice (Yarnell) Ruby. He was raised near McCook and attended McCook High School, graduating in 1962. Rube proudly served in the U.S. Army until his honorable discharge in 1965. He then moved back to McCook where he worked many years at the Elk’s Club.

Rube resided at the veterans home for over 30 years. During that time, he made many friends and enjoyed making crafts and ceramics.

Left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Katie Lewis of Council Bluffs, IA and Wanda Gouldsmith of Omaha; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Rube was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Warren Ruby, Dean Ruby, Don Ruby, Raymond Ruby, Bill (Tiny) Ruby, Dorothy (Ross) Vanpelt, Eileen (Raymond) Boyd and Clara Keen; brothers-in-law, Lefty Lewis and Joe Gouldsmith.
