Mary Ellen was the daughter of George and Olive (Townsend) Elbert. Her grandparents were Simon and Gertrude (Hufnagel) Elbert and Daniel and Melicent (Shaw) Townsend; great grandparents Nathan and Nancy (Williams) Townsend and Joshua and Hannah (Pogue) Shaw.
Her siblings were: Millicent (M. John Colfer), Rose (Sister Aloysius), Esther, Agnes (m. Roy Lyon), George Bernard, Cecelia (m. William Geiger), Gerald, Olive (Jason D. Dorwart) and Margaret Clare Elbert.
