H. Hein Obituary
H.Allan Hein passed away July 15, 2007, at Midland Hospice House, after a short illness. Allan Hein was born in Culbertson, Nebraska, October 24, 1919, the youngest child of Anna Elizabeth (Wacker) and Henry Hein, Jr. After growing up in McCook, NE, he graduated from Hastings College in 1940 Bachelors of Music Education degree, and later earned a Masters of Music Education Degree from Wichita State University. He began an extensive music education career, teaching both choral and instrumental music, and specifically teaching private trumpet and other brass instruments lessons. He taught at Seneca High School, before moving to Topeka in 1951, to teach at Boswell Junior High School until moving to Topeka West High School in 1961, where he taught some choral and all instrumental music until 1967. He moved to Washburn University to teach trumpet, brass, and to serve as the band director in 1967, after having taught private lessons there for many years. He taught at Washburn University until his retirement in 1984. Allan Hein was lovingly known by his students as Big Al Hein. After his retirement from Washburn, Allan continued to teach private trumpet and other brass instrument lessons, worked at Griffith & Blair real estate as a real estate agent, and also served as a doorman at the State Capitol for the House of Representatives. He finally retired from teaching private music lessons the day his wife, Evelyn, died on November 26, 2005. Allan Hein served with distinction in the Army Air Corps in World War II as a bombardier on B-17s, flying numerous missions in the European theater. Allan was involved in numerous activities in the music community, playing as a member of Marshalls Band, as first chair trumpet of the Topeka Civic Symphony, and as a member of several jazz bands during his career. He guest directed and conducted numerous concerts, including concert bands in conjunction with Lions Club and other organizations during his 60 year career in music education. Allan was involved in many activities of his children and grandchildren. He married Evelyn K. Price December 17, 1944, in Topeka. He is preceded in death by his wife of 50+ years, Evelyn K. Price Hein and also by his parents and one brother and five sisters. He is survived by his son Larry Allan Hein and his wife, Kathleen, and their children Matthew, Reed, and Lacy; and by his son Ronald Reed Hein, and his wife Julie, and their children Derek and Jennifer. Funeral services will be at Penwell-Gabel Southwest Chapel at 37th and Wanamaker at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 19, 2007. Burial will be immediately following at Mount Hope Cemetery with military honors provided by a detail from Ft. Riley.
