Elizabeth Lillian Schmidt, 104, died Saturday, Dec. 18, 1993 at Michael Manor where she had been a resident since 1980. She was born, along with a twin sister, Isabelle, on March 10, 1889 in McCook, Nebraska, the daughter of John and Catherine (Trudnowski) Schmidt. She grew up in McCook, graduating from McCook High School in 1908. Following high school she worked for a time as a bookkeeper for a hardware store. When World War I broke out she was a white lady with the Red Cross and lived in Washington, D.C. In 1928, she worked in the Presidential Campaign for Al Smith, who was defeated by Herbert Hoover. Also on April 27, 1928, she proved up and received title to her homestead. She lived in Wyoming until 1936, when she returned to Washington, D.C. and went to work for the United States Compensation Commission. Upon retirement she returned to the ranch and Wyoming and resided there until her brother, Bill, died in 1972. She then lived with her nephew, Harold Schmidt, who she had raised along with Eulalia Duran and Elizabeth Sutton. In 1980, she moved to Michael Manor where she resided until the time of her death. She is survived by four nieces and three nephews. She was preceded in death by her father in 1935 and her mother on April 16, 1916; twin sister, Isabelle in 1920; her oldest sister Hedwiga of Washington, D.C.; her brothers, Joe and Edmond of Denver, Colo. and Carl, Herbert, William and Ted all of Douglas; and two young siblings who died at an early age in McCook.
