DR. JOHN PAUL HAM

Dr John Paul Ham was born in Benkleman, Nebraska February 13, 1889 and was educated in Nebraska schools. He graduated from the University of Nebraska, the University of Chicago, and Rush Medical College, Chicago. John interned at Wesley Memorial Hospital in Chicago and at St. Louis City Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.

It was while he was interning at Wesley that he met and married Jane Elva Finch on December 15, 1915. She was a registered nurse and was nursing at Wesley Hospital. Elva was born at Pana, Illinois January 9, 1892.

John brought his bride to Benkleman to meet his family on their honeymoon. It was during this visit that John decided to locate his practice in general medicine in Yuma, Colorado, in 1916. He owned and operated the Yuma Drug Store in connection with his practice for 25 years. He was the attending physician, 1938, at the Yuma Community Hospital and at the Lutheran Deaconess Hospital from 1929 to 1938. John was treasurer of the Yuma Public Schools and Yuma High school from 1933 - 1941; was a member of the Yuma County Draft Board in 1917; was on the Red Cross Committee from 1917 to 1918; and was local health officer for many years. He was also a member of the Yuma-Washington Medical Society (Pres. 1942; Treas. 1946). He was a member of the state medical society, the AMA, the American Academy of General Practice; and the Yuma Chamber of Commerce.

They had five children. The last two died shortly after birth. Agnes, first born, died at age 26. Joseph, second born, died in 1970. Marietta, third born, married Leo Stasica They had three children. Leo died in 1982.

"Doc" Ham died one month before his 75th birthday. He was still practicing and had visited some patients in the hospital on the morning of the day he died.
