Longtime Sonora resident Helen Mae (Meyer) Frontz died April 19 at a Sonora hospital. She was 94.
Mrs. Frontz was born on a farm in Wellfleet, Neb., to William C. Meyer and Carolyne Anderson Meyer. She came to Northern California in 1938 and worked as a bookkeeper. She met George Frontz on New Year's Eve of that year and they were married on Oct. 15, 1939, in Carson City, Nev. Her husband worked on several mines in Northern California while they lived in Auburn and later moved to El Portal. Their daughter, Anita Elaine Frontz, was born in Merced on April 29, 1941.
The family moved to Richmond, so Mr. Frontz could work in the shipyards. In 1945, they moved to North Sacramento.
The Frontzes then leased a grocery store-gas station in Greenwood from 1947 to 1952. Mrs. Frontz worked in the store and was also the bookkeeper. After the lease ended, they returned to their home in North Sacramento. She worked for the state Franchise Tax Board, and later at McClellan Air Force Base as a classified accountant. When she retired from McClellan in 1977, and her husband retired from Safeway, they moved to Sonora to be close to their daughter and grandchildren. In 1979, they became members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They enjoyed serving as ordinance workers in the Oakland Temple for 12 years.
Mrs. Frontz enjoyed maintaining her home, traveling, fishing, the outdoors, gardening, games and puzzles. She also enjoyed visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She became a great-great-grandmother in August.
She is survived by her daughter, Anita Elaine Treat, and her husband, Leo, of Sonora; grandson, Stephen M. Cozart, and his wife, Laurie, of Danville; great-grandchildren Corey A. Milne and his wife, Emily, of Wrightwood, Kevin Milne of Washington D.C., Garrett Cozart of Pleasanton, Ryan Milne and Landon Milne, both of Wrightwood; and great-great-granddaughter, Averie Marie Milne of Wrightwood.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Raymond Meyer, in 1959; mother, Carolyne Meyer, in 1969; father, William C. Meyer, in 1979; and her husband, George M. Frontz, February 27, 1916 - December 15, 1994.
