Former Grants Pass resident Inez Thelma Kirkes, 97, of Sunland, Calif., died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 2009, at her home.

A graveside service was held at Hillcrest Memorial Park, with her son-in-law, the Rev. John Chambers, officiating. Chapel of the Valley-L.B. Hall Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.chapel-valley.com.

Kirkes was born May 9, 1912, in McCook, Neb., to Albert C. and Jeanette M. Hockman. She trained as a registered nurse and worked as a nurse for 40 years, including many years at an outpatient clinic in northern California.

On Dec. 1, 1938, in Fresno, Calif., she married Wallace B. Kirkes, who died in 1957. She moved to Grants Pass in 1980 from Menlo Park, Calif.

She enjoyed gardening, especially growing tomatoes and planting fruit trees.

Survivors include a daughter, Debra L. Musack of Sunland, Calif.; two sisters, Phyllis Coats of Sacramento, Calif., and Kathleen Winters of Washington state; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A son, Wallace G. Kirkes, died in May 1967.
