Charlotte and her younger brother, Harry, were born to Frank and Mabel Grace (Abbey) Van Wormer. After a few years, their parents divorced. Mabel married William Howard "Will" Thompson, who just happened to be an uncle of Frank Van Wormer. He raised both kids, Harry took his surname, and they added new baby, Dawn, to their numbers.
