Long-time Bellevue West coach Faiman dies at 71

Long-time Bellevue West football head coach John Faiman died unexpectedly Saturday night at the age of 71.

Faiman, the Thunderbirds’ coach for the past 26 seasons, also had coaching stints at David City, McCook and Omaha South before moving into the college game as an assistant in 1977. In eight seasons, he coached at Washington State, Missouri, Utah and Kansas State before taking the Bellevue West job in 1986.

Faiman had a career record of 192-173-3. He guided Bellevue West to 13 Class A state playoff appearances,  including 10 since 2001.

Faiman, an Omaha native, played both football and baseball at Nebraska in the early 1960s after a stellar high school career at Omaha South
