The Silver Star for gallantry in action is awarded Posthumously to Private First Class ROBERT E. ROTH, US55276504, Infantry, United States Army.

During the early morning hours of 30 May 1953, in the vicinity of Kwakchon, Korea, Private Roth, a member of Company B, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, heroically gave his life in order to assure the safety of his comrades. As a machine gunner in a group supporting a wire laying team in front of outpost Hedy, he valiantly manned his weapon when a strong enemy force attacked the detail with small arms and automatic weapons accompanied by a heavy mortar barrage. With complete disregard for his own safety and thinking only of his fellow soldiers, he remained behind to cover their withdrawal and the evacuation of wounded comrades. Private Roth continued firing his weapon effectively and aggressively until all had reached safety, and he fell mortally wounded by the intense enemy fire. His determination, unhesitating devotion to duty, and the courageous sacrifice of his own life for his comrades are indeed worthy of the highest praise and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the United States Army.
