Glenn Underhill - Class Of 1942

Glen M. Underhill Tuesday, December 2, 2003 RIVERDALE -- Glenn M. Underhill, 78, died Friday (Nov. 28, 2003) at his home in Riverdale. He was born Oct. 30, 1925, in Cornell Township near Trenton to G. Fredrick and A. Mabel (Jackson) Underhill. He graduated from McCook High School in 1942 and graduated from McCook Junior College. He farmed until he moved to Gordon, where he taught at Lakota Mission School until 1953. In 1955, he graduated from the University of Nebraska-Kearney with a bachelor of science degree in physics. He then moved to Lincoln and received his masters degree from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1957 and in 1963 he received his doctorate in physics from UNL. On Dec. 27, 1958, he married Susan Day at the Grandview Church near Miller. The couple made their home in Riverdale in 1963. He was a physics professor and the director of the planetarium at the University of Nebraska at Kearney from 1963 until he retired in 1991. He was a member of the First Church of God, served on the Board of Elders, several other church boards and was a Sunday School director. He was also a member of Sigma XI, American Radio Relay League, QCWA, American Association of Physics Teachers, Nebraska Academy of Science, Lambda Delta Lambda and Sigma Tau Delta. He was the recipient of the Council of Deans Award, an admiral in the Nebraska Navy, a lifetime member of the Buffalo County and State Historical Societies and a member of the Underhill Society of America. He also served as a chairman of the Riverdale Village Board from 1978 until 2003. He was preceded in death by his son, Enoch in 2001 and two brothers. Survivors include his wife, Susan Day Underhill of Riverdale; two sons, G. Mark of Lincoln and Sterling of Panama City, Fla.; three daughters, Rachel Lueck of Arcadia, Gretchen Hinkle of Shepherdsville, Ky., and Cynthia Hanus of Lincoln; two brothers, Earl of Gordon and John of Trenton; one sister, Fern Alexander of Guatemala City, Guatemala; and 17 grandchildren. Services are Wednesday, 10 a.m., at First Church of God in Kearney with the Revs. Charlie Gable, Larry Lauteret and Charles Underhill officiating. Interment is in the Armada Cemetery in Miller.
