Lois Kay (Gassaway) - Class Of 1939

Funeral services for Lois Kay Gassaway, 86, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hamilton's Funeral Home on Lyon Street. Burial will follow at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines. Visitation with the family will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Lois was born in McCook, Neb., on July 4, 1921. She and her father trained horses for harness racing and Lois was proud that they later won an Iowa State Fair harness race. She graduated from Van Sant School of Business in Omaha, Neb., in 1940 and married James A. Gassaway that year. She worked as a secretary at the Martin Bomber Plant in Omaha during World War II and came to Des Moines in 1948. Lois retired in 1986 as an executive secretary at Meredith Corporation, where she had worked for 25 years. She was a member of Heritage Assembly of God Church and Order of the Eastern Star. She died Friday at Union Park Health Services in Des Moines, where she had resided for five years. Her family is appreciative of the wonderful care she received there. Her survivors include a son, Robert (Carole) Gassaway of Des Moines; two daughters, Janet (Bill) Schwarz of Clive and Mary Millard of Des Moines; five grandchildren, Melissa Myers, Lisa Hickcox, Brad Stitzell, Sarah Lynch and Tyler Lynch, all of Des Moines; and two great-grandchildren, Jessi Myers and Lindsey Myers, both of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; her parents, Elmer and Zelpha Kay; a brother, Bud Kay; and a sister, Elizabeth Bumpas. Memorial contributions may be made to the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation.
