Immediately following graduation, he joined the U.S. Marine Crops serving as an artillery officer in the 6th Defense battalion on Midway Island in the Pacific ocean for 25 months. He received an honorable discharge from the reserves as a Major in October 1957.

Prior to his service overseas, he was united in marriage to Marion L. Patton of Lincoln, Neb., on Oct. 10, 1942, in Washington, D.C.

Upon his return from military service, he entered the banking profession, first as a National Bank Examiner working out of the Omaha, Neb., office. In 1951, he was asked to join City National Bank, Hastings, Neb., where he served for two years as a loan officer and vice president. He then joined the First National Bank, McCook where he was employed for 33 years, retiring in 1986, as President of the bank.

During his years with the bank, he attended and graduated from The School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin; served as President of the McCook Junior and Senior Chambers of Commerce; helped organize the first United Fund Drive in McCook; served on the Airport Authority Board at the time of the construction of the new terminal building; served as a Director of the Hillcrest Nursing Home Board, President of the McCook Rotary Club and Treasurer of the YMCA Board of Directors; was elected to the McCook School Board; served as organist for both the McCook Elks Lodge and the State Elks organization; and served as President of the Nebraska Bankers Association.

His contribution to McCook and the surrounding area did not end with retirement. In 1994, Harold, along with his family and other investors, built Willow Ridge Retirement Community in McCook, bringing much needed senior housing and services to McCook.

Harold was a gifted musician having played trombone as a college student in the University of Nebraska Marching band, and most of his adult life in the Shrine Marching Band. But it was his God-given gift of playing the piano by ear that brought so much Joy and happiness to so many people. He gave freely of this talent, playing whenever asked for local and statewide organizations, community functions, area retirement communities and nursing homes.

Preceding his death were his parents, Rolland and Lola Larmon.
