Lewis "Bud" A. Harmon, age 90, died Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2008, at Community Hospital in McCook.

Bud was a life long resident of McCook. He was born on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 29, 1917, to Gerney L. and Madge M. (Anderson) Harmon at 608 West 3rd Street in McCook where he resided at the time of his death. He graduated from McCook High School in 1936 and attended McCook Junior College for a year.

On Aug. 20, 1938 he married Betty J. Carpenter in Boulder, Colo. To this union seven children were born, Linda, Mike, Tracy, Kirby, Jean, Ann and Teresa.

As a very young man, Bud became a business man. He and Betty bought the grocery store across from the Junior-Senior High School (B&B Grocery) where students as well as Army Air base people ate and hung out. They expanded it into a "Drive-In Superette," and this led to a restaurant supply business where he designed and installed many of the restaurants in the area. He continued the grocery business with neighborhood stores on West L and South 6th Street.

Bud began experimenting with making his own products. He gave up his restaurant supply business to manufacture products he developed. The B&B Grocery location became his manufacturing plant. He developed and manufactured his own detergents, salad dressings, soups, meat tenderizer, liquid malt, syrups, pie fillings, biscuit and pancake mixes. "Harmon's Restaurant Supply Co." sold these items, along with South Dakota bison meat. Some of his more memorable inventions were, "Gobs of Glob," "Sizzle Seeds" and "Cinnamon Toothpicks" which he still produced and sold at the time of his death.

He was a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church and a lifetime member of the McCook Elks Club.

Preceding him in death were: his parents; son, Tracy; daughters, Kirby and Ann; sisters, Geradine Osborn and Betty Grant; and two granddaughters, Christine (Harmon) Miller and Melissa (Harmon) Scott.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Harmon of McCook; son, Michael Harmon and friend, Janice Cotnoir of McCook; daughters, Linda Boone and husband, Barry of Dixon, Calif., Jean Hallowell and husband, Terry of McCook, Teresa Stanfield of Ft. Worth, Texas; 16 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Memorial services will be Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at 11 a.m. at St. Alban's Episcopal Church. Cremation was chosen, and inurnment will be at a later date.
