He was born Feb. 7, 1917, at Spring Ranch, Neb., near Hastings, to Frank and Hazel (Coba) Kammerlohr. He moved with his family as a young boy to McCook where he graduated from high school with the class of 1935. Following graduation, Maurice worked for Pat's Bootery. In 1937, he moved to Lexington where he helped open Pat's Bootery in Lexington. It was during this time he met and married his sweetheart, Marjorie Haworth, on July 18, 1937, at Hill City, Kan. Three children were blessed to this union, Linda, Kent and Tom.
He was called to serve his country in April of 1944, where he served in the U.S. Army. He served in the European African Middle Eastern Theater. Maurice was wounded during his time in the Army and received the Purple Heart for valor. He was discharged in January of 1946. Upon his discharge, he returned to Lexington where he worked for Ayers Clothing. In 1947, he went into business with Glen Gilbert and started Lexington Laundry and Dry Cleaning. He spent 30 years in this business and upon retiring, sold the cleaners to Bob Sherman.
Maurice and Marjorie enjoyed spending their summers at Johnson Lake and wintering in Green Valley, Ariz., moving permanently to Green Valley in 1988. Upon Marjorie's death in 1991, Maurice continued to reside in Green Valley, until moving back to McCook in 2000.
He was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, a past member of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce, the Lexington City Council, past commander of the American Legion, and the Masonic and Shrine Clubs.
Maurice enjoyed woodcarving, hunting, fishing, dancing and spending time in Canada fishing with his friends.
Survivors include two sons, Kent Kammerlohr of Carrollton, Texas, and Tom and wife, Sharon Kammerlohr of Sterling, Colo.; one daughter, Linda Waterhouse of Johnson Lake, Neb.; his special friend, Phyllis Marsh of McCook; nine grandchildren, Kelley (Curt) Dachtler of Gothenburg, Neb., Tony (Jana) Waterhouse of Choctaw, Okla., Tye (Cherie) Waterhouse of Minden, Neb., Todd (Jenny) Waterhouse of Kearney, Neb., Amy (Russell) Collins of Lewisville, Texas; Marjorie Kammerlohr of Gainsville, Fla., Emily Kammerlohr of Phoenix, Ariz., Betsy (Ron) Bogie of Pedroni, Colo., and Larry Kammerlohr of Denver, Colo.; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Maurice was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marjorie; and four brothers.
It was Maurice's wishes his body be cremated.
A memorial service will be Friday at 2 p.m., at Reynolds-Love Funeral Home in Lexington with the Rev. Michael Churchman officiating. There will be military honors by the Lexington American Legion.
