Nola Stone (Appleyard) - Class Of 1933

Nola B. Appleyard, 87, died Thursday (April 17, 2003) at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook. She was born April 24, 1915, in Simela, Colo., to Harry V. and Myrtle (Bales) Stone. She grew up in McCook where she graduated from McCook High School. She attended McCook Junior College. She began teaching rural school in Frontier County. On Aug. 12, 1940, she married Oliver J. Appleyard. They resided in Curtis for 28 years where her husband owned and operated Appleyards Standard Oil Company. They moved to McCook in 1969. She was a member of the United Methodist Church for 60 years and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Oliver in 1993; one brother, Dick Stone; and three sisters, Alice Conrad, Mala Thornley and Elfie Weaver. Survivors include three daughters, Marilyn and husband, Earl Johnston of Curtis, Janet and husband, Paul "Dow" Newcomb of Cambridge and Judy Mercer and companion, Paul Paz of McCook; three brothers, Lloyd Stone and wife, Mary of Eldorado Springs, Mo., Roger Stone of Nevada, Mo., and Larry Stone of Hays, Kan.; three sisters, Norma and husband, Russ Moore of Delta, Colo., Laura and husband, Waine Stuck of McCook and Clara Simeon of Grand Island; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Tuesday, 10:30 a.m., at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Jeffery Thurman officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook.
