Ava Hix, 91, of Washington, Iowa, former Fairfield resident, died Saturday morning, February 25, 2006, at Halcyon House in Washington.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 3 at First United Methodist Church in Fairfield with Rev. Mike Metz officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery.

Family visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, March 2 at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield. Memorials may be directed to Halcyon House, 1015 South Iowa Avenue, Washington, IA 52353 or Alzheimer's Association.

Ava was born January 22, 1915 in Marion, Nebraska, the daughter of Jacob Ernest and Grace Relph Weyeneth. She was a 1932 graduate of McCook Senior High School in McCook, Nebraska. In 1938 she graduated from Evangelical Covenant Hospital School of Nursing in Omaha, Nebraska. She then began her nursing career at Jefferson County Hospital at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield. Ava served as A U.S. Army nurse in England and France during World War II.
On February 6, 1946 Ava married Kenneth L. Hix in McCook, Nebraska. Kenneth preceded her in death on November 25, 2001.

A devoted wife and mother, her home was always warm and welcoming. Ava's grandchildren have fond memories of baking and eating cookies in Grandma's kitchen and playing cards with Grandma and Grandpa. Kenny and Ava were avid card players in a pitch club for many years with local friends. She was a longtime member of the Friendly Circle Sewing Club and enjoyed quilting and crocheting.

She is survived by her children; Gail Gevock (Joe) of Swisher, Joyce Brodie of West Des Moines, Duane Hix (Medora) of Cedar Rapids, and Kathy Baker (Tom) of Fairfield and her 11 grandchildren; Laura Carder (Jeff), Linda Thalman, Lisa Gevock, Ryan Brodie, Kristen Brodie, Meredith Hines (Jeremy), Adam Hix, Monica Hix, Brittney Hix, Sean Baker, and Brad Baker. Ava's great-grandchildren are Emily Thalman, Abigail Thalman, Sarah Carder, Grace Carder, Trenton Hines, and Kamron White. Additionally she is survived by her sister Evelyn Spaulding of Ferguson, MO, sister-in-law Joyce Weyeneth, former son-in-law Steve Brodie and many nieces and nephews.

Ava was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, a son Dan, two brothers Norris and Leonard and great-granddaughter Rebecca Rose Carder.

Ava's family will forever cherish memories created by her caring and compassionate love.
