Lulu Cobb (Balius) - Class Of 1932

Lulu Delphine "Lou" Balius died Saturday (Oct. 5, 2002) at the Holton Manor Nursing Home in Holton, Kan. at the age of 86. She was born April 17, 1916, at Trenton, the daughter of the late Samuel Clayton and Eva Mae (Parrott) Cobb. Lou grew up at Stratton and came to McCook in 1932, where she graduated from McCook High School. On Aug. 23, 1934, Lou married Wilbur John Balius. They spent their lives in McCook. During World War II, Lou worked at the Army Air Base and McCook and later managed the M & E Cafe. From 1967 to 1978, she worked at St. Patrick's Rectory and school and was a self-employed housekeeper until retiring in 1986. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Wilbur on Nov. 8, 1984. Lou enjoyed her grandchildren, working crossword puzzles and visiting relatives, neighbors and friends. She spent the last three weeks at Holton. Lou is survived by her daughter, Lorena "Suzy" and husband, Dan Mehringer of Holton; three grandsons, Christopher Mehringer of McCook, Stephen Mehringer of Virginia Beach, Va. and Mark Mehringer and wife, Virginia of Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, Virginia Brant and Vlasta Viola and husband, Herman Pritchett all of McCook; nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be Wednesday, 10:30 a.m., at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with the Rev. Harlan Waskowiak officiating. Cremation will follow the funeral and inurnment will be in Calvary Cemetery in McCook. The rosary will be recited today, 7:30 p.m. at Herrmann Memorial Chapel. Memorials may be given in her name and friends may call at the funeral home. Herrmann Funeral Home of McCook is in charge of arrangements.
