PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Les D. Stennette, 92, died Sept. 21, 2006, in Phoenix. He was born Aug. 31, 1914, in McCook to Charles and Myrta Stennette. He graduated from McCook Junior College and attended the University of Nebraska. He worked for the federal government following the 1935 flood in the Republican River Valley as a purchasing agent supplying the work camps that were established to rebuild. He continued with the government in Grand Island and Lincoln. In September 1940, he married Maxine Peterson of Beatrice. He worked for the War Department, U.S. Corps of Engineers (Cornhusker Ordnance Plant), and was later transferred to the air base in Kearney, where he received a commendation for a job well done. After the war, he was transferred to Denver, working at the War Assets Administration regional office. He completed his work in 1948 and moved to Longmont. In 1950, he was the crew chief on the U.S. Census for Boulder County. During this time, he took a job with the Gibson Tractor Co. He, Jack Fagan and Chick Clark founded Colorado Stone Co., in February 1949. He served two terms as president of Building Stone Institute, an international trade organization for the stone industry. He contributed to many other associations, including serving as president of the Longmont Chamber of Commerce, board member of the YMCA, and director, vice president and president of the Longmont Rotary Club. He was a member of Rotary for 50 years. His first wife died in 1978. He married Peg Rohrbaugh in 1981. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; a brother, Wayne LaVerne (1967); four sisters, Irene Ogier (2001), Edna Morris (2001), Adelene Kvasnicka (2001) and Lillian Ruth (died in infancy, 1920); a stepgrandson, Travis Rohrbaugh (1989); a daughter, Mary Jo "Jodi" Bross of Boulder (2005); and a stepson, Randy Rohrbaugh (2006). Survivors include his wife, Peg, of Sun Lakes, Ariz.; a daughter, Sandi and husband, Charles "Chick" Misura also of Boulder; a son, Jim Stennette, his wife Cindy of Longmont, Colo.; a son-in-law, Don Bross of Boulder, Colo.; a stepdaughter-in-law, Connie Rohrbaugh of Phoenix; a stepdaughter, Linda Glass and husband, Mike, also of Phoenix; and eight grandchildren. Contributions may be made to the Longmont Rotary Club or the Hospice of the Valley, Dobson House in Phoenix.
