Marilyn was born in Holdrege, Nebraska to Ernest J and Pearl E (Glandon) Almquist.
She attended school in Ragan, for a couple of years before the family moved to McCook, Nebraska. She graduated from McCook High School in 1951. On October 26, 1952, she married Larry Melvin McCarty in Omaha. Together they made their home in McCook and to this union four children were born. Marilyn was a homemaker and worked in the family businesses. She was a member of Evangelical Free Church and P.E.O. Chapter GY.
Marilyn wrote the following a couple years prior to her death: "My Life's Purpose My brother Jim & Sis Karen always told me - that doing & living for others was what I did best. And I guess it's so - The fulfillment, the happiness & the feeling of completeness that comes from doing & helping others is all the reward I need. I suppose I got this from my Dad for he always said "I'm only going to go through this world once, therefore if there is some good that I can do, let me do it now for I will not pass this way again". He also said we should leave the world a better place to live. I embrace all this & add that I hope that my life will be remembered for the good I did and the happiness I brought to others in love. As I have lived my life first in my first family, I tried always to do for my Mom & Dad, to be someone for them. My sister & brothers I enjoyed doing for & being someone to my Aunts & Grandmothers. I've been there for friends - others first always. Then came a husband & four children - they came first, all my love & care went into helping them become what they've become. I didn't do it alone; the Lord gets the credit. I was not perfect - I'm still not - but my dream is that when the setting sun sets upon my days, my God in Heaven will say, "you've done good".
My purpose then will always remain to press on toward the higher mark, helping others in whatever way I can, thus making a difference for the better in the lives of those I loved."
