Joseph "Dal" Wood - Class Of 1948

Joseph D. "Dal" Wood Jr. died Sunday, Nov. 6, 2005, at his home in McCook. He was 75 years old. He was born July 9, 1930, in McCook to Joseph D. and Pearl (Lawritsen) Wood. He was a graduate of McCook High School in 1948, McCook Junior College in 1950 and the University Of Nebraska College of Law in 1954. He served in the Nebraska National Guard, the Nebraska Air Guard and was activated and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. On Feb. 21, 1955, he married Bernadine Sulzman in McCook. To this union five children were born. Dal practiced law in McCook and was a member of the Nebraska State Bar Association, serving in the House of Delegates for 27 years. He also was Red Willow County Attorney from 1958 to 1972. He was a member of the First Congregational Church, the Congregational Church Foundation, the McCook Lions Club, Elks and McCook Masonic Lodge No. 135. He served on the city of McCook Civil Service Commission from its beginning until his death. He was also a long time member of the McCook College Foundation. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his wife, Bernadine of McCook; children, Mary Wood of Manhattan, Kan., Matthew Wood and wife, Krystal of Cheyenne, Wyo., Paul Wood and wife, Linda of McCook, Virginia "Ginger" Stewart and husband, Christopher of Tyler, Texas, and Susan Bartek and husband, Larry of Omaha; 12 grandchildren, Retha and Sara Wood, Elise Polly, Joseph and Jennifer Wood, Joshua and Allison Hofer, Emily and Erica Wood, Kyle, Spencer and Sydney Stewart; and a great granddaughter, McKenzie.
