Robert Manley Obituary

LINCOLN, Dr. Robert Manley, 80, of Lincoln died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2008.

A family graveside service will be at the Hoyt Cemetery in Hoyt, Kan.

There will be no visitation. Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Manley was born on Feb. 23, 1928, at Neilsville, Wis., to Milford and Janet Manley.

Survivors of the immediate family include his wife of 58 years, Phyllis; children, Bob Manley Jr. of Tooele, Utah, Janet Keller of Lincoln, Carol Miller of Lincoln, John Manley of Kearney, Kelly Manley of Sacramento, Calif., Susan Miller of Overland Park, Kan., Joy McArtor and Becky Richardson, both of Lincoln.

Additional survivors include 22 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He grew up in Villa Park, Ill., and attended Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Ill. In 1950, he moved to Belleville, Kan., to play semi-pro baseball. It was there he began his teaching career and married Phyllis Hall on Nov. 8,1950. In 1951, he began his 50+ year career in Nebraska. He taught history in McCook, Osceola and Seward high schools, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Hiram Scott College in Scottsbluff. He later worked for Selection Research, Inc., Stuhr Museum in Grand Island and the Nebraska Department of Economic Development. Bob's accomplishments were many during his life, but two of which he was most proud were his promoting of Jim Fras' song, 'Beautiful Nebraska,' which became the state song, and his work with rural communities of Nebraska, using an economic development process he called 'Community Builders.' His life will long be remembered as one which was dedicated to his family, as well as the children, the educators and the communities of Nebraska. He worked tirelessly to promote, teach and live one of his core beliefs. In order for people to know they have a future, they must first know they have a past.

Memorials may be sent to City Impact, 400 N. 27th St. Lincoln, NE 68503 or to a charity of one's own choosing.
