John Nothnagel - Class Of 1969

John Kent Nothnagel was born on May 5, 1951 in McCook, Nebraska to Albert Henry and Shirley Lou (McCormick) Nothnagel. He graduated from McCook High School with the class of 1969 and furthered his education at McCook Community College and the University of Nebraska Lincoln. John was united in marriage to the love of his life, Betty Zwickl at St. James Catholic Church in Curtis, Nebraska on February 7, 1975. John and Betty made McCook their lifelong home where they raised their three children: Lindsey, Nick, and Matt. John started working as a salesman for CT Jewell Company in 1972, working for his father, Albert. In 1988 John purchased the company and ran the business with Betty until 2012 when CT Jewell Co Moved to Omaha. The company later transitioned to Nick’s Distribution where John continued to work with his entire family. John enjoyed playing pool, cards, and especially golf! Many summers were spent at Red Willow Lake, boating and fishing. The family also made many trips to Lake Tahoe when the children were young. John loved mowing his yard and was a fan of a good cigar. He was an avid supporter of his grandkids and all of their activities; you could quite often find him driving them around on his golf cart! John was a longtime McCook business owner who took great pride in giving back to his community, a passion he passed on to his children. Anyone that knew John knew that he loved his family and friends fiercely! John passed away Friday morning, May 12, 2023 at his home in McCook. He was 72 years of age. John was preceded in death by his father, Albert Nothnagel; brothers, Baby Joe Nothnagel, Louis Nothnagel, and Frank Nothnagel; grandparents, Ken McCormick, Paul Nothnagel and Elizabeth Leonard, and George and Lillian Schaal. He is survived by his wife, Betty Nothnagel of McCook; mother, Shirley Nothnagel of McCook; his children, Lindsey Nothnagel, Nick and wife, Hanah (Swanhorst) Nothnagel and Matt and wife, Michaela (Hoyt) Nothnagel all of McCook; grandchildren: London Lynch, Henry, Liam, Ezra, Arlo, and Montana Nothnagel; brother, Danny Nothnagel; sister, Jolene (Nothnagel) Schmidt and husband, Bob; as well as nieces, nephews, cousins, and countless friends. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2023 from 10:00 AM - 5:30 PM at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. A rosary will be recited at 5:30 with John's family greeting friends afterward. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1PM on Friday afternoon, May 19, 2023 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in McCook with Father Dale Allder celebrating. Cremation will follow services and a burial with take place in McCook at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to City of Hope Cancer Treatment Centers of America (14200 West Celebrate Life Way, Goodyear, Arizona, 85338) or to St. Patrick Catholic Church in McCook (601 East 4th Street, McCook, Nebraska 69001).
