Benedict "Ben" Horkey - Class Of 1966

 

McCOOK, Neb. — Benedict “Ben” Joseph Horkey, age 71, of McCook, died unexpectedly June 21, 2019, at Bryan East Hospital in Lincoln, Neb. Ben was born April 7, 1948, in McCook, the son of Joseph and Marie (Wawrosch) Horkey. He graduated from McCook High School with the Class of 1966. Following graduation, Ben served as an electronics specialist in the military. He proudly served his country in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Vietnam War. Ben was not only a radio repairman, but also an excellent marksman who received recognition for his precision with a rifle. Ben passion for motorcycles led him to the real love of his life, his wife, Doris (Nichols) Horkey. Doris and Ben met in a motorcycle shop. The couple married on June 26, 1971, and started a family in 1973. They were blessed with five children. Ben was a devout Catholic and dedicated member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. He was employed by KN Energy and later, Kinder Morgan, where Ben retired in 2006 after 37 years of employment. He could often be found tinkering in the garage or participating in amateur radio. In addition to his parents, Ben was preceded in death by his son, Jeremy Horkey. Those left to celebrate his life include his wife, Doris Horkey of McCook; daughters Justina Horkey of North Platte, Neb., Angela Lathwood of McCook, Monica Eder of Kearney, Neb., and Corinna Horkey of Elm Creek, Neb. Also surviving are Ben’s eight grandchildren, Bethanie, Joseph, Abigail, Cage, Drake, Jovi, Diem and Rogan. Visitation is today, Tuesday, June 25, 2019, until 7 p.m., at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook. Recitation of the Rosary will follow visitation, beginning at 7 p.m., also at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, June 26, 2019, beginning at 10 a.m., at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook with Father Gary Brethour as Celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow in the Calvary Cemetery, McCook.
