Joan Calvin
February 11, 1942 — January 18, 2026
Joan Kay Calvin passed away at Great Plains Health in North Platte, Nebraska on January 18, 2026, she was 83 years old. Joan was born on February 11, 1942, to Harold and Faye (Loomis) Shepherd. She grew up on a farm near Spring Creek and attended a one room country school. She graduated from McCook High School. On October 11, 1959, Joan married her high school sweetheart, Keith Calvin.
To this union there were two children born, Rodney and Shelly. Joan and Keith lived in McCook, and she worked at Dr. Dennis’ dental office until her first child was born. In 1968, Joan and Keith moved south of Culbertson, Nebraska.
In addition to raising her children, Joan enjoyed her favorite pastimes of riding horses, including her favorite horse, Beple, and gardening. Over the years, Joan developed an impressive flower garden that graced their home and grounds each summer.
After raising her children, Joan worked at the K-Store and then at Culbertson school as a lunch lady until her retirement.
Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her twin sister, Joyce; a brother, Gary; and a grandson, Cody Calvin.
She is survived by her husband, Keith; son, Rodney (Peggy) Calvin, North Platte, NE; daughter, Shelly Calvin, Hershey, NE; grandchildren: Samantha (Chris) Tyan, Hershey, NE, Bridgett (Turner) Dorr, North Platte, NE, Cooper (Jana) Bollman, Odell, NE, Jennifer Calvin, North Platte, NE, and Tyler (Rebecca) Calvin, North Platte, NE; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Keith (Gloria) Shepherd, McCook, NE; and sister-in-law, Gladys Calvin, McCook, NE; as well as numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1:30 PM on Thursday, January 22, 2026 at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook with Pastor Alisa Parde officiating. Burial in Riverview Cemetery of McCook will follow services.
Viewing will take place prior to services, beginning at 10:00 AM on Thursday morning at the funeral home in McCook.
