Bernita Lorene Reiners was born on February 1, 1941, in Akron, Colorado to Theodore and Alta (Welty) Moffitt. A proud graduate of McCook High School’s class of 1959, Bernita’s roots remained deeply planted in the community she loved.

On June 19, 1960, Bernita and Harlan Reiners were united in marriage at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook, where they began a lifelong journey together. The couple made McCook their forever-home, filling their houses on West L and East 5th with love, laughter, and the joyful energy of their three sons. Bernita kept a peaceful home and was a dedicated homemaker, she gracefully balanced the demands of raising a family while also putting her masterful sewing skills to work, working from home as a seamstress for Vogue.

Bernita’s devotion extended beyond her family. For 65 years, she was a faithful member of Peace Lutheran Church, a cornerstone of her spiritual life. She also found joy and camaraderie as a longtime member of the Piecemakers Quilt Guild in McCook, where her artistry and warmth touched many hearts. Her quilts were more than fabric and thread; they were expressions of love and friendship and they continue to be cherished heirlooms for many of her loved ones. Known for her patient piano lessons and unmatched baking, especially her beloved cookies, Bernita’s talents and kindness left lasting impressions. Her beautiful gardens, lovingly tended each year, were yet another testament to her nurturing spirit.

Surrounded by the love of her family, Bernita peacefully passed away on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, at Highland Park Retirement Home in McCook. She was 85 years old. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Above all else she will be remembered as a woman that loved Jesus.
