TOLEDO, Ohio -- David E. John, 77, of Toledo, passed away Dec. 2, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

A memorial visitation will be Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016, from 4-7 p.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama, Iowa. There will be no public funeral service.

David was born on Sept. 14, 1939, in Atwood, Kan. His parents were Arthur G. and Irma (Baker) John.

He graduated from McCook High School in McCook, Neb., in the class of 1957. He received his bachelors and MBA from Western State College in Gunnison, Colo.

On June 2, 1962, he was united in marriage to Cynthia Funk in Palisade, Colo. David was a former band instructor at South Tama High School from 1968-1999. From 1962-1968, he taught at Montezuma-Cortez Junior High in Cortez, Colo.

David loved the Nebraska Cornhuskers and Chicago Cubs. In earlier years, he taught swimming and tennis and coached a Pony League baseball team. David was a beautiful piano player which was his "main" instrument " God put him on this earth to teach and he loved his students, treating them with great respect.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Cynthia of Toledo; two children, Brian John of Toledo and Vickie Beaver of Clutier; one granddaughter, Cassie Beaver of Clutier; and one cousin, Roger (Dixie) Olson of Johnstown, Colo.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Arthur John and Irma John (Elmer) Stetzel; and an infant brother, Arthur J. John.

A memorial fund has been established.
