Velma Deloris Hanger

GRAND ISLAND, NEB. -- Velma Deloris Hanger, age 79, passed away Sunday, June 5, 2016, at Golden Living Center -- Grand Island Lakeview.

Velma was born on April 29, 1937, to Erick and Pearl (Alley) Ebert in McCook. She grew up in McCook and graduated from McCook High School in 1956.

Velma entered the U.S. Navy on Nov. 5, 1956, and was honorably discharged Jan. 25, 1957.

On Aug. 30, 1957, she married Carl C. Hanger in McCook. To this union four children were born.

She enjoyed drawing, reading books, her cats and listening to the birds sing.

Velma volunteered as a greeter for 19 years at the VA hospital in Grand Island.

Survivors include her sons, Eric (Kristi) Hanger of Riverton, Wyo. and Jonathan (Alonda) Hanger of Owensboro, Ky.; daughters, Tammy Hanger of Grand Island and Ethel Hanger of Lincoln; sister, Frances Haily of Missouri; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl on June 28, 1997; brothers, Kenneth Ebert and Carl Ebert; sisters, Erma Nokes, Karen Townsend and Minnie Hill; one granddaughter, Ashley Lavery and one great- granddaughter Mikincy Hanger.

Graveside memorial services with military honors will be Friday, July 15, 2016 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Russell Wolf officiating. Inurnment will be at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell.
