In Memory

Dwight Gallatin - Class Of 1951

Dwight Eugene Gallatin, 89, a longtime farmer in the Danbury area, passed away Sunday, August 1, 2021 at El Dorado Manor in Trenton, Nebraska. He was born on December 2, 1931, to John and Helen (Hoffstrand) Gallatin at the family farm in Red Willow County, Nebraska. Dwight attended school in Bartley and later in McCook where he graduated from McCook High School with the class of 1951. He attended college in McCook for one year before joining his father, working on the family farm. Dwight joined the Nebraska Army National Guard in 1949 and served for nine years. Dwight married Susanna Sughroue on January 19, 1958 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Cambridge, Nebraska. The couple made their home on the farm near Danbury where they would spend their entire lives together. Dwight was a man that was content to be on his own. He enjoyed his life’s work of raising crops and animals and took a real interest in solar energy, using panels to power many things on the farm. He had a true love for all animals and enjoyed all types of music; he would sit on the piano bench while Susanna played and he would sing. In his younger years he was a pilot and loved flying. The family thanks the many home caregivers that made it possible for Dwight to stay on the farm every moment that he could. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Susanna; sister, Bonnie Carfield; and sister, Jackie Gallatin. Survivors include his daughter, Robin (Harry) Marks of Indianola; granddaughter, Alexis (Kaleb) Popp of Indianola; great-granddaughter, Stormy Popp of Indianola; and sister, Sandra Gallatin of McCook. Should I ever get to Heaven, I shall ask no golden crown, but only just a little plot of earth: rich, warm and brown. And with it a few seeds to plant; some little sprouts to tend. And let me know their blossoming; their fruit at summer’s end. But do not call me, God, in spring when orchards are in bloom, And the breeze that sweeps my valley wafts a heady, rare perfume. Wait – Maybe that the summer will offer less of charm; Your paradise, can it compare to April on the Farm? Gladly I will go in autumn when we’re done with harvesting, Or when winter chills the spirit; but please, God, not in spring. A private family interment will take place in the Danbury-Marion Cemetery. There will be no viewing or visitation. Memorials are suggested to the McCook Humane Society in Dwight’s name. Online condolences may be left at herrmannfh.com. Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel is entrusted with arrangements.
