Mary Wasia (Howerter) - Class Of 1950

McCOOK, Neb. — Mary C. Howerter, age 87, formerly of Cambridge, passed away at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook on Saturday, April 17, 2021. She was born in McCook on July 11, 1933, to Andrew and Johanna (Pick) Wasia. Mary attended and graduated from McCook High School in 1950. On April 3, 1951, she was united in marriage to George Howerter. They started their married life in Garden City, Kan., before moving to Cambridge in 1954. He preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 2007. Mary was employed for a brief time at the Marble’s Jack and Jill grocery. She later worked at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital for 20 years, retiring as the supervisor of the Housekeeping Department. Mary was an avid reader, she especially loved love stories, liked to solve crossword puzzles and play card games. She was always looking for her dog, Bella, that was a Shih tzu. She was preceded in death by her parents, Johanna and Andrew; husband, George; grandson, Seith Howerter; daughter-in-law, Joy Howerter; four sisters, Leona, Andy, Loretta, and Norma; and three brothers, Kenneth, Sylvester, and Ted. Mary is survived by her two daughters, Loretta Skogberg of Monta Video, Minn., and Johanna (Ron) Jardine of McCook; two sons, James of Grant, Neb., and Greg (Cindy) of Cambridge; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Graveside inurnment will be at the Fairview Cemetery in Cambridge on Thursday, April 22, 2021, at 11 a.m., with Rev. Tim Burke officiating. Friends may leave online condolences at lockenour.com. Memorials may be left in Mary’s name at the Lockenour-Jones Mortuary in Cambridge. Lockenour-Jones Mortuary is entrusted with arrangements.
