Bernice Sulzman (Hayes) - Class Of 1949

Bernice Marie Hayes December 3, 1931 — May 31, 2022 Bernice Marie (Sulzman) Hayes, 90, passed away May 31st surrounded by family. Bernice was born in Selden, KS, the 4th child of Joseph and Mary (Miller) Sulzman. She grew up and attended schools in Selden, KS and McCook, NE. She earned her RN from the St. Joseph School of Nursing at the College of St. Teresa in Kansas City and worked as a nurse in the long-term care industry. Bernice met and married Patrick Hayes in Kansas City. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage. They had six children. Bernice was a devoted wife and mother. Being a depression-era child, she learned that nothing was to be wasted and no one was to do without. She always found a practical way to bring forth renewal, whether it was a person in distress or an object in need of refurbishing. She was a green thumb gardener and a diligent word puzzle solver. She had deep faith and a strong devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick, two sisters, Helen Gedminas and Dolores Hope, and daughter-in-law, Hollie Hayes. She is survived by her children: Patrick Hayes, Mary (Dave) Eberhart, Dennis Hayes, Timothy (Mari) Hayes, Kevin (Pilar) Hayes and Christopher (Susan) Hayes; her grandchildren: John Wood, Bryan Hayes, Timothy Hayes, Steven Hayes, Mallory Tanner, Wendy Force, Elizabeth Hayes, Liam Hayes, Patrick Hayes, and Joseph Hayes and great grandchildren Benjamin Hayes, Yoshi Hayes, and Sebastian Hayes, and her sister, Bernadine Wood.
