Richard Schafer - Class Of 1947

 

SCHAFER, Richard G.
(November 18, 1929 - December 11, 2011)
Richard “Antique Dick” Schafer, age 82, of Birchwood, WI died Sunday, December 11, 2011 at the Lakeview Medical Center in Rice Lake, WI.

He was born November 18, 1929 at Red Willow County in Nebraska to John and Amelia (Eckhart) Schafer. Richard graduated from McCook High School and entered the United States Army serving during the Korean War from 1949 to 1952. He was a Life Member of the VFW and DAV. On May 29, 1954 he was married to the former Elizabeth McCurdy in Lincoln, NE. The family moved to Wisconsin in 1967. Richard was a charter member of the Altoona VFW # 10405. Richard was a self-employed Lithographer at Star Graphics in Elk Mound, WI. He enjoyed antiquing, fishing, hunting, repairing fishing reels, coaching, Boy Scouts, dancing and playing baseball (drafted by the Cardinals). He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Birchwood, WI.

Richard Schafer is survived by his wife, Betty Schafer of Birchwood, WI; 4 sons, William (Phyllis) Schafer of Brodhead, WI, Kenneth (Vickie) Schafer of Fall Creek, WI, James (Charrise) Schafer of Sunset, UT and Edward (Kathy) Schafer of Holly Springs, NC; 3 daughters, Theresa (Bob) Kivi of LaCrosse, WI, Susan (Dave) Blocher of Dayton, OH and Rebecca DeMelfi of Anchorage, AK; 13 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; a brother, Eldon Schafer of Tucson, AZ and a sister, Norma Moyer of Sacramento, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Amelia Schafer; and 2 brothers, Dallas and Lawrence.

A Memorial Mass will be held 11:00 AM Friday, December 16, 2011 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Birchwood, WI, Fr. David Oberts officiating, with inurnment in the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Spooner, WI where Military Rites will be accorded by the State Honor Guard. Visitation will be held from 10 - 11 AM Friday at St. John’s Catholic Church.
