In Memory

Joan P. Smith (Bourn) - Class Of 1946

Joan P. Bourn

Bourn, Joan P. (Smith) Joan Bourn, devoted mother, grandmother, and teacher, passed away on January 2, 2021, age 92, in Colorado Springs. As the only child of a school teacher and businessman, Jo’s rural Nebraska upbringing instilled in her an appreciation for nature, a hard work ethic, and a warm sense of humor. She was proud to have been awarded undergraduate and graduate degrees in education. After marrying Larry Bourn in 1953, she raised two children in Denver and remained there until her last years. Jo was a dedicated teacher and, later in her career, a passionate legal advocate for adult vocational education. Jo had a lifelong love of the arts, the outdoors, and animals, affections she passed onto her children, grandchildren, and to the many friends whose lives she enriched. She is survived by her former spouse and friend Larry Bourn, son Scott (Marilyn) and daughter Mary, and grandchildren Jason (Aniko), Chris, Megan (Peter), Emily (Scott), and McKenzie. Donations in her honor can be made to the Jo Bourn Memorial Fund at the Rocky Mountain Conservancy. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
