McCOOK, Neb. -- Velma Ruth Joy, age 90, of McCook, passed away at her home on Sept. 23, 2016. She was born on the family farm south of McCook on April 8, 1926, to Herman and Serena (Zimmerman) Messinger. Ruth graduated from McCook High School in 1943.

Ruth farmed alongside of Wayne. She worked at the McCook Air Base during the war. Ruth was also employed for many years at the bank in Trenton. She stitched quilts, crocheted, and volunteered at the El Dorado Manor when her mother was a resident. She was an avid University "Big Red" fan, loved golf and dancing. Ruth loved her pets, raising many stray dogs and cats that were left by strangers along the road. She also collected angels.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Betty Crocker and her husband, Don.

She is survived by her two brothers, Merlin and wife, Eunice Messinger and Willard and wife, Eva Messinger, all of McCook; along with many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grandnephews.
