Joan Ruth Petersen Cooper
OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — Joan Ruth Petersen Cooper, age 86, of Oak Ridge, passed away Thursday, Feb. 24, 2011, at the Methodist Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 14, 1924, in Hastings, Neb., the daughter of Benton Christian Petersen and Mary Artha Englebright Petersen.
Mrs. Cooper and her husband, Ray, were married and graduated from Kansas University in 1951. They moved to Tennessee when Ray accepted a job with Union Carbide at the Gaseous Diffusion Plant (K-25).
Mrs. Cooper was an occupational therapist and worked many years for the Daniel Arthur Rehabilitation Center and the Anderson County school system.
She was a long-time member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. She was an avid traveler and loved to knit, work in her yard, garden and grow African violets. She also took great pleasure in participating in a ladies investment club.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Raymond Eugene Cooper, January 8, 1973.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Elizabeth Cooper Gammon and husband, Frank, of Huntersville, N.C.; her sons, Kenneth Eugene Cooper and wife, Abby, of Andover, Mass., and Michael Allan Cooper and wife, Kim, of McDonald, Tenn.; six grandchildren, Brittany Elizabeth Gammon Allen and husband, Wesley, of Charlotte, N.C., Michael Troy Gammon of Raleigh, N.C., Evan Albert Cooper and Thomas Calvin Cooper, both of Andover, Mass., and Kerry Susan Cooper and Erin Ray Cooper, both of McDonald, Tenn. Mrs. Cooper was also eagerly anticipating the birth of her first great-grandchild on April 1.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor C.N. Willborn officiating and burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
The family asks that any memorials be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church Building Fund or to a charity of the donor's choice.
