Bill Carroll - Class Of 1942

 

Bill D. Carroll HUTCHINSON, Kansas -- Bill D. Carroll, 89, died Nov. 29, 2011, in Hutchinson. A veteran of World War II, he was a sergeant in the 3rd Ranger Battalion, U.S. Army. Bill was wounded at Monte Cassino, Italy, and spent six weeks in a hospital in North Africa, after which he returned to the front lines to help liberate Rome, then fought his way through southern France and Germany. Returning home, Bill completed his degree at Kearney College in Nebraska. After his graduation, he began a 38-year career with the YMCA, spending 18 years as Executive Director of the Hutchinson YMCA. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, the YMCA, past member of the Hutchinson Rotary Club and a member of the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, New Windsor, NY. Bill is survived by Lee, his wife of 64 years; daughter, Susan J. Wachs; son, Steven B. Carroll; granddaughters, Deanna C. Pressgrove and Stephanie R. Wachs. He was preceded in death by his parents; his parents-in-law; a son-in-law, Bill Wachs; brothers, Jack and Richard Carroll; and two brothers-in-laws. Graveside service was held Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, at the Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence, Kansas. Military honors were conducted by the Ft. Leavenworth Honor Guard, with taps being played by Dick Mattox, a former McCook friend. A memorial sevive will be held Dec. 27, 1:30 p.m., at Elliott Mortuary, Hutchinson, Kansas.
