McCOOK, Nebraska -- William Earl Meyers, 90, passed away Sunday (Feb. 27, 2011), at Community Hospital in McCook.

He was born March 11, 1920, in Wilcox, Nebraska to Albert and Lizzie (Burkholder) Meyers. He graduated from McCook High School in 1937.

Earl served his country in World War II. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942, and following his tour of service in the Asiatic and European Theaters was honorably discharged on Feb. 14, 1946.

Earl married Virginia Petersen in Curtis, Nebraska on July 31, 1949. To this union four daughters and one son were born.

He was a member of the First Congregational Church in McCook where he served on the board of trustees and in many other capacities. Earl was elected to the District 8 School Board for several terms, and was also a Driftwood Feeders 4-H Leader for many years.

Earl was a wonderful woodworker, especially gifted in repairing and restoring furniture. He was also proud to have built his family a wonderful home. Earl worked for Allied Oil and Supply from 1969-88 before farming in the area.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia of McCook; daughters, Linda of Lincoln, Nebraska, Janice and husband, Roy Petersen of Seattle, Washington, Barbara and husband, Pat Shurtliff of Grayslake, Illinois, and Jean and husband, Jon Johnson of Albion, Nebraska; son, James Meyers and wife, Kathy Steadman of Selden, Kansas; sister, Elva McBride of Exeter, Nebraska; 14 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are Friday, 11 a.m., with Pastor Steve Bales officiating, followed by a fellowship lunch. Private family burial is prior to services.
