Darold Schlegel - Class Of 1946

CULBERTSON -- Darold Willard Schlegel, 75, died Sunday, August 10, 2003, at his home in rural Hitchcock County after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born June 6, 1928, to Willard Clinton and Helen Irene (Nelson) Schlegel in Red Willow County, and was known as "Dutch" to many of his friends. He attended school at District No. 29 and then McCook Senior High School. He graduated in 1946.

He was baptized at Zion Hill Country Church in Northwest Red Willow County and was a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson.

On June 8, 1947, he married Marjorie L. Covert. The couple made their home and raised their family on the family farm in Red Willow and Hitchcock counties.

He was a 4-H leader, involved in the Nebraska Shorthorn Association in which he served as president, and Stockgrowers. He was a past member of the Board of Directors of H and RW Irrigation District and Tri-State Livestock and was a seed corn salesman for 30 years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Willard; one sister-in-law, Betty Clark; and two brothers-in-law, Warren Clark and Harry Fahrenbruch.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie Schlegel of Culbertson; mother, Helen Schlegel of McCook; three sons, Doug Schlegel of McCook; Tim Schlegel and wife, Kathy of Centerton, Arkansas; and Mike Schlegel and wife, Carol of Culbertson; one daughter, Kristi Schlegel of Aiken, South Carolina; one sister, Gernadine and husband, Gene Bortner of Indianola; one sister-in-law, Doris Fahrenbruch of McCook; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday, 10 a.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson with the Rev. Daniel Spearow officiating. Burial will be at the Culbertson Cemetery. Visitation is today until 5 p.m. and Wednesday 9 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be given in his name.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
