GRANT -- C.V. "Babe" Fidler, 81, died Wednesday (Nov. 28, 2001) at the Perkins County Community Hospital in Grant. He was born Oct. 13, 1920, at Freedom to Merle and Louise (Koitch) Fidler. He grew up in McCook and graduated from McCook High School in 1940. He attended the University of Wyoming and McCook Junior College on a baseball scholarship. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served as a Navy fighter pilot in the Pacific theater during World War II. He received the Flying Cross medal for his actions during the war. On April 11, 1943, he married Helen Cappel at a base in Norman, Okla. After his discharge he established a plumbing business in Hayes Center. In 1957, they moved to Grant where he owned and operated Fidler Plumbing and Heating for 25 years until his retirement in 1982. He was a lifetime member of the Missoul Synod Lutheran Church, the Grant American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his wife, Helen; three sons, Keith and wife, Virginia of Sidney, Mike and wife, Janet of McCook, and Chris of Imperial; two brothers, Harold of Bullhead City, Ariz., and Neal and wife, Bettie of McCook; and one granddaughter.
