Gary Alstot - Class Of 1948

Alstot, Alvin "Gary", was born on May 29th, 1930 in McCook, Nebraska and died on July 25, 2008 from esophageal cancer. Gary graduated from Northwestern with a degree in Civil Engineering. While in college he met and later married Carol Bartizal. Gary's career as a civil engineer took his family across the mid-west. Gary started his own civil engineering firm, Alstot & March, Inc., in Chicago, Illinois. After selling his firm, he worked as a consultant in a variety of engineering projects throughout the world. Gary and Carol finally settling in Laguna Beach, California where they resided for over 20 years. Gary retired and pursued his passion for local politics, initially publishing cartoons under the name knoncents. He later wrote a column for the local newspaper while staying active in city government. Gary was a member of Laguna Beach Rotary, the Taxpayers Association, and the Clippers of the Laguna Presbyterian Church. He was a writer, inventor and self-described, problem-solver, looking for ways to improve local government. Gary and Carol celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 2003. In 2004, Carol lost her thirty-year battle with scleroderma. Gary is survived by his three children, Sue, Corvin (Gayle), and Steven (Kate), as well as five grandchildren, Crystal, Jeffrey, Faith, Lauren, Louisa, and one great-grandchild, Andrew. The family would like to give special thanks to Gary's dear friend, Beverly Longfield, who enriched his life and was a great support to him throughout his illness
