Dorothy Somers "Dot" Britt, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009, at Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte at the age of 77.
She was born Feb. 27, 1932, at Mitchell, S.D., the daughter of the late Dan and Bess (Gallagher) Low. Dorothy grew up at Beatrice, where she graduated from Beatrice High School in 1950. In 1954, she graduated from the University of Nebraska Teachers College with a Bachelors Degree in education.
On Aug. 8, 1954, Dorothy married Ted Britt at Beatrice. They came to McCook in 1954, where Dot taught school at North Ward and was a daily walker and an avid bridge player. She also enjoyed golf and reading as a hobby. Ted taught and coached all sports in the new McCook High School. Dot retired in 1986. In 1957, Ted joined Hull Oil Company, retiring in 1995.
Dot is survived by three daughters, Jocelyn Sue Carmichael of Indianola, Cory Gean Britt and companion David West of San Diego, Calif., and Betsy Somers Fowler of North Platte; one son, Ted R. Britt and wife, Monica of Magnolia, Texas; seven grandchildren, Hailey Kirbach, Kyle Carmichael, Brandon Fowler, Sheree Rodriguez, Ted Andrew Britt, Ella Britt and Hayden Britt; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Maich of Lakewood, Colo., and three nieces.
Funeral services were June 12, 2009, at St. Alban's Episcopal Church in McCook with the Rev. Dr. Mary Hendricks officiating. Inurnment was be in St. Alban's Columbarium.
Memorials may be given in her name.
