Nov. 19, 1944 - Sept. 29, 2013

OBERLIN, Kansas -- Harriette "Jane" Unger, age 68, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska.

Jane was born Nov. 19, 1944, to Harry and Erciel Drake. She graduated from McCook Senior High in 1963. After graduation, Jane attended Wesleyan University, where she obtained her bachelor's degree in science. Shortly after, she began working as a medical technician in both Lincoln, Nebraska, and later in McCook. She also worked at the McCook Community College bookstore and Olson's Soil Lab.

Each of her jobs involved helping people on different levels. She truly enjoyed this and her smile reflected it.

On Oct. 18, 1968, Jane married Douglas Reid and they resided in McCook. Jane and Doug had two children, Marnie and Darcie. In 1991, tragedy struck and Jane was left a widow.

Two years following the accident, Jane met Roy Unger, allowing her to find happiness and she began showing her smile once again.

Meeting Roy Unger and later getting married, Jane began to enjoy life anew. Her marriage to Roy was one that she described as wonderful. And Roy, according to Jane, was her very best friend. She and Roy lived outside of Oberlin, Kansas, where Jane adapted to farm life and spent time looking after lambs, gathering eggs and relaxing in the peace of the outdoors. She truly enjoyed it.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Erciel Drake and former husband, Doug Reid.

Survivors include her husband, Roy Unger of Oberlin; daughters, Marnie Marquardt and Darcie Jameson of McCook; brother, Richard and wife, Mary Lou Drake of McCook and sister, Sandra Bell of Cambridge; five step-children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Each of them had a special place in her heart and unlimited love was always given to each of them.

Jane was an amazing person who took little and gave to those who needed it. She was selfless and believed wholeheartedly in God and his wishes for us. Her smile could light up a room and her love was unconditional. She will be greatly missed.
