While in high school, Bettie worked at the Fox Theatre and Woolworth and was a former Miss McCook. Bettie graduated from McCook High School with the class of 1948.

On June 6, 1948, she was united in marriage to Neal Roderick Fidler at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook. To this union three children were born. Bettie became a Communicate member of Peace Lutheran Church after going through confirmation and Holy Baptism on May 15, 1949. She served as a past member on the Board of Evangelism and also taught Sunday School.

She loved the outdoors and cherished the camping and fishing trips with her family. Bettie's other hobbies in her younger years included her bowling league, league volleyball and archery of which she was the recipient of the Robin Hood Award. She loved children of all ages including the students she met while working at the college, many of which she still kept in contact with. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she loved following them in all their activities.
