Harold Clapp - Class Of 1946

Harold Eugene "Peck" Clapp

September 14, 1929 - October 30, 2016

U.S. VeteranHarold Eugene “Peck” Clapp of McCook passed away Sunday, October 30, 2016, at El Dorado Manor in Trenton. He was 87 years old.

Harold was born at rural Brush, Colorado, the youngest child of six children, to John Wesley and Sylvia Wretha (Painter) Clapp. As a young child the family moved to McCook where Peck received his education. He graduated from McCook High School with the class of 1946.

On February 4, 1951, he married Phyllis L. Unger at Peace Lutheran Church in McCook where they would remain members for their entire life. The couple was blessed with three children, Steve, Deb, and John. On May 17, 1951, Peck entered the US Army and served his country until his honorable discharge on April 4, 1957. He returned to McCook where he worked as a serviceman for Kansas/Nebraska Gas Company, a salesman for JC Penney Company and was a letter carrier for the US Post Office for many years, retiring in 1989.

As a young man, Peck and his family played baseball and it became a major part of their lives. Peck and Phyllis loved to spend time together camping, fishing, playing cards and taking bus trips to Rose Bud. Peck would hardly miss a night watching the game of Wheel of Fortune and was especially proud the day his grandson, Kasey, was on the program. He was a tinkerer of anything that needed fixing or in need of some tender loving care. He spent hours searching for the right car to buy and later sell. His family was the most important thing in his life especially his grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents, John and Sylvia Clapp; his wife of 64 years, Phyllis Clapp on March 11, 2015; two sisters, Virginia Stanich and Vera Dayley; and three brothers, Lester, Chester, and Robert Clapp.

He is survived by his three children, Steve Clapp and wife, Lee, of McCook, Deb and husband, John Jurgensen, of Lincoln, and John Clapp of McCook; grandchildren, Josette and husband, Justin McConville, and their children Brodie and Lexie; Elly and Jaydee Jurgensen; and Kasey, Erica and Sydney Clapp; brother-in-law, Kenneth Dayley, Sr. of The Dalles, OR; a as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
