William Vern Rouch was born in Denver, Colorado, on August 2, 1923, to Clarence Vern Rouch (1891-1956) and Ethel Othilia Johnson (1899-1926). His mother passed away when he was three years old. His father, Clarence, worked as a Freight Trucker, Yard Clerk, Brakeman and eventually a Conductor on the train runs from McCook, Nebraska, to Denver, Co. As such, Bill often lived with relatives, either in McCook, or in Denver. He is found listed in several censuses with extended Rouch family relatives. He was educated in McCook, Nebraska. An avid fan of football, he played well, was Captain of his high school football team, and taught his sons and grandsons strategies of the game. During WWII, he joined the Navy, serving off the coast of Japan on the Mine Sweeping Crew of the USS YMS 290.
