Leonard Sines - Class Of 1939

Leonard W. "Link" Sines, 82, died Sunday (Dec. 15) at Community Hospital of McCook. He was born Nov. 15, 1920, at Marion, to Guy Brentz and May A. (Lafferty) Sines. He attended McCook High School and graduated in 1939. On Sept. 1, 1939, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served as Gunnery Sargeant. He was on board the USS Tennessee the Day of Infamy. He served with the 2nd Marine Division during World War II, with landings on Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for Action on Tinian. He was also awarded Presidential Unit Citation for Tarawa and Tinian. He was honorably discharged on Sept. 20, 1945. On June 9, 1946, he married Vernice Reiners at McCook. He was employed as a salesman for the Keebler Company for 26 years. He retired on April 1, 1986. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod, rural Ash Creek, Lutheran Laymen's League, American Legion, Second Division Association, and Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. Preceding him in death were his parents, Guy and May Sines; two brothers, Willis D. Sines and Elmer Dee Sines; and one sister, Alice Nicoll. Survivors include his wife, Vernice of McCook; one daughter, Linda Kay and husband, Richard Clark of White Bear Lake, Minn.; two sisters, Avis Haworth of Berthoud, Colo., and Iris Troester of Greeley, Colo.; and two brothers, John Sines of McCook and Paul Sines of Anchorage, Alaska; three grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Services will be Thursday, 11 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church, in rural McCook with the Rev. Brian Hofensperger officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in McCook at 2 p.m. with full military honors.
