Willam Axelson - Class Of 1952

Denver, Colorado; Bill was born in McCook Nebraska, and spent his childhood enjoying the freedom a small town offered. He was a first generation American, his parents had immigrated from Norway/Sweden thru Ellis Island. Bill enjoyed working with his brother in law at his airplane hangar on the McCook Air Base after the war. In high school he was on the football team and after graduation he worked briefly for the railroad in McCook and transported cars for sale to Denver then would ride the train back to McCook. Bill graduated from McCook Junior College. Bill met Jean in Nebraska, where they were married in 1955. Their first son was born in McCook. Shortly after they made a trip to Colorado for Bill to see about a job with the Martin Company. He got the job and they had a weekend to go home pack up and move to Colorado settling in Denver where they raised their 5 children. He enjoyed taking his family to the mountains of Colorado to camp, drive jeep trails and explore all the old ghost towns to go metal detecting there including parks and any other place that looked promising. A lifelong learner he took classes in many aerospace fields offered at Martin. Bill worked in Aerospace at Martin Marietta in Denver as a Manufacturing Engineer and retired after a career of more than 30 years. After retirement he enjoyed meeting his friends on the weekend to look for treasures at the flea markets around town. Fall was his favorite time of the year to take off to the mountains to see the Aspen turn and just go for a drive. His wife Jean loved Christmas and his contribution every year was to flock the Christmas tree and to get a special gift for each of the grandchildren.. Bill was preceded in death by his wife Jean Axelson, his parents Carl and Amanda Axelson, brothers Tore and Kjell and sisters Evelyn and Shirley, and their daughter Barbara. He is survived by his children, Kevin, Steven, Laurie and Judy, five grand-children and two great grand-children along with many nieces and nephews. His inurnment will be at a later date at Mount Lindo Cemetery in the foothills of Denver.
