The greatness of a man is not how much wealth he acquires, but in his integrity and his ability to affect those around him positively. Donald A. Hein went to his heavenly home on March 27, 2022. He was born in Broken Bow, Nebraska on October 23, 1929, to Arthur and Flora (Zimmerman) Hein and had one brother, Gordon Hein. Don was raised in McCook, Nebraska where he attended McCook Schools and married his high school sweetheart, Virginia (Gillen) Hein, his beloved wife of 71 years. Together they raised their four daughters, Patricia (Michael) Cornish, Rebecca (Gale) Loop, Barbara (Jay) Emory, and Lesa (William) Clifford. During these years he worked for the BN Railroad where he retired from after 39 years. He took great pride in being part of his high school State Championship football team. His love for fishing includes a story about landing the Nebraska State walleye record for 12 years. He was an extremely talented man in all aspects of life. He could build a house or sew an apron for his daughters for 4-H. A lover of nature and the outdoors was exhibited through his beautiful yard along with his rose garden. He enjoyed hunting and was an avid fisherman with his wife and daughters, so in his retirement years he spent many days with Virginia and friends fishing. His family will remember all the cherished times from baking Christmas cookies, sledding, fishing trips, fish fries, and vacations. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife; his brother and sister-in-law, Gordon (Loretta) Hein; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Doris (Albert) Leblanc, Clarence Gillen, and Francis (Joan) Gillen. Don is survived by his children; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Betty Gillen. Don was a strong, kind, loving, and supportive father. He was a calm, cool, tough, brave, and a diverse person and did it all with a sense of humor and a positive spirit. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you finally found mom. Don chose cremation and memorial services will be held at 11:00 am, Monday morning, April 4, 2022 at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook with Jay Emory officiating. A private family inurnment will follow services in Saint Patrick Calvary Cemetery in McCook. Memorials may be given in his name or to Highland Park Retirement Community in McCook.
