Mary Swanson (Poore) - Class Of 1942

 

Mary Verlene Poore, 95, a longtime resident of McCook, passed away at her home in McCook on March 9, 2021. She was born on December 14, 1925 to Swantie and Esther (Garrett) Swanson in McCook, Nebraska. Mary attended school in McCook, graduating from McCook High School and attending McCook Junior College. At just eighteen years old, she worked as a bookkeeper at Camp Indianola, a World War II POW Camp near Indianola, Nebraska. On September 30, 1950 Mary was united in marriage to Don Poore. They made McCook their home where they raised three children, Michael, Thomas, and Kathleen. Mary had a small dress shop in McCook. She was a lifelong member of Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook and was a longtime supporter and champion of the Museum of The High Plains in downtown McCook. Mary enjoyed china painting and working in her garden. She loved collecting “stuff” and was happiest when attending auctions and more auctions. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Don; daughter-in-law, LaDonna Poore; and sister-in-law, Beverly Swanson. She will be missed and remembered by her children, Michael (Kathleen) Poore of Phoenix, AZ, Tom Poore of McCook, and Kathy (Chuck) Myers of McCook; grandchildren: Ethan, Josh, Mariah, Wes, Ellee, Kristina, and Michelle; great-grandchild, Jonah; extended family Trieu, Nhi, Sa, Vi, Xuan, and Lynn; brother, Bruce Swanson of McCook; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 11, 2021 from 10:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. at Herrmann-Jones Funeral Chapel in McCook. The family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday morning, March 12, 2021 at Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with Rev. Jeff Kelley officiating. Interment will follow services in Memorial Park Cemetery, McCook. Memorials are suggested to the Museum of the High Plains in McCook, Nebraska.
