Robert A. Pfeil Wednesday, January 29, 2003 ALMA -- Robert A. Pfeil, 76, died Sunday (Jan. 26, 2003) at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He was born Sept. 13, 1926, in Doniphan, to Clarence LaVelle and Nellie Pearl (Sparks) Pfeil. He attended school in Doniphan and Grand Island, and his first three years of high school at Kearney. He graduated from McCook High School class of 1944. On June 3, 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy at Omaha. He served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart and the American Area Victory Medal. He was honorably discharged on May 15, 1946, at the U.S. Naval Personnel Separation Center at St. Louis, Mo. Following his discharge, he farmed with his father north of McCook. On June 5, 1949, he married Ruth Cicilie Hansen at Laramie, Wyo. He then took over his father's farming operation north of McCook. They moved to Alma in 1958, where he continued to farm on the McNitt farmstead north of Alma. In 1959, they moved to the Darrel Wolfe farm west of Alma, where they have since resided. He farmed until 1961. He was employed for a time at Don Calkin's Conoco fertilizer plant and the Alma Block and Lumber. He began working for the City of Alma in 1960, and retired in 1992. He was a member of the Full Gospel Business Men of Holdrege and the Word Teaching Center at Alma. He was a former member of the Assembly of God Church until it closed, the Free Methodist Church and later the New Life Assembly, all of Alma. He traveled with the Pfeil Family Singers from 1979 to 1985. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Burdette Pfeil and wife, Joan and Michael Pfeil; and a brother-in-law, Frank Chipperfield. Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Alma; daughter, Judith and husband, Donn Williamson of Stamford; three sons, Curtis Pfeil and wife, Debbie, David Pfeil and wife, Cindi and Russell Pfeil and wife, Marlene all of Alma; a sister, Virginia Chipperfield of Alma; sister-in-law, Karen of Lincoln; 16 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Memorial services will be Sunday, 2 p.m., at the Word Teaching Center in Alma. A private burial was conducted Tuesday in the Alma Cemetery at Alma. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to a memorial fund that has been established. Banta-Torrey Funeral Home of Alma is in charge of arrangements.
